One of Senegal’s best-known musicians, Thione Seck, 66, has died in Dakar after a short illness.

“He died this morning of an illness at the Fann hospital,” his lawyer, Ousmane Seye stated.

Seck came from a family of griots, or praise-singers, and first rose to prominence in the 1970s with Orchestra Baobab, known for its mix of African and Cuban music.

He went on to found his own group, Raam Daam in the 1980’s which played the distinctly Senegalese sound, mbalax.
