A Senegalese opposition group has suspended plans for three days of huge protests called by opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

The demonstrations scheduled for March 9 and 10 are suspended,” the Movement for Defence of Democracy, or M2D, said in a statement.

It also added that it would outline plans for future protests at a press conference on Tuesday.

At least eight people have died during days of violent protests in Senegal sparked by the arrest of Mr. Sonko on charges of public disorder.
