Not less than eighteen passengers died in a road accident, which took place on Akure road, Ondo State.
The incident happened on Saturday, 8 June involving a white Toyota Hummer Bus and a heavy-duty truck with registration number YLA25XU AND GG873XM respectively.
The accident happened few metres away from the popular Akure Airport road on the Akure-Owo highway.
According to an eyewitness, Mr Temitope Adeola, “the driver of the bus was coming from Abuja with speed while the truck driver was driving from the wrong side of the road, both drivers collided and immediately the two vehicles went up in flames and all the passengers were burnt into ashes and even beyond recognition,” he said.
Heads of Operations of the FRSC in Ondo State, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide confirmed the incident; he said the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking and speeding on the side of both drivers.
“The whole passengers in the Hummer bus died in the crash. All of them were burnt beyond recognition and they were mostly adults traveling from Abuja,” Said Ogungbemide.
He added that the rescue Team of Federal Road Safety Corp had evacuated the casualties.
Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, Femi Joseph also confirmed the incident and said the truck driver survived and ran away immediately after the crash.
