221 police officers are attached to Anambra Governor Obiano for his protection - Nigerian Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday said that 221 police officers were attached to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra for his personal and office protection.

Obiano had alleged the withdrawal of his Aide- De- Camp (ADC).

Reacting to the claim, the Nigerian police denied withdrawing the security aides attached to Mr. Obiano.

Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood, in a statement issued on Thursday, faulted reports that the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) and Chief Security Officer to the governor were withdrawn by the police.

He said a total of 221 personnel, including the ADC and CSO, are attached to the governor for his personal and office protection.

The statement comes a day after President Muhammadu Buhari and the Senate ordered the police authorities to restore Obiano’s security aides.

Contrary to the reports, Moshood said both men were called on November 14 to attend a lecture with other police personnel and stakeholders deployed for Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

According to him, the CSO and ADC returned a few hours after the lecture to their duty posts at the Government House in Awka.

“The Anambra State Police Command had issued a press statement to clarify the reasons why the ADC and CSO to the governor were called to the command headquarters in Awka for the lecture and that they were not withdrawn.

“It is also pertinent to set the record straight and inform the public and re-emphasise the fact that the ADC and CSO to the governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano, were not withdrawn from their duty posts,” the police spokesman said.

“Obviously, the total number of 221 police personnel attached to His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra State is more than the strength of some Police Area Commands in some states of the country.

“This is done to ensure optimum safety and protection of the executive governor of Anambra State,” he added.

Moshood further urged the public to ignore the reports, saying police’s arrangement to ensure a conducive atmosphere for a credible, free and fair election would not be compromised.

He said the arrangement would also cover the protection of all aspirants participating in the election, as well as electorates and electoral officials among others.
