South Africans burn down houses of Nigerians, other African immigrants

At least 15 houses either belonging or rented by immigrants, especially Nigerians, have been burnt by angry residents in Rosettenvile, south of Johannesburg.

The residents are reported to be angry that foreign nationals had turned the neighbourhood into a drug haven.

Africa Review reports on Sunday that some shops belonging to foreign nationals in the area were also looted.

South African residents in the area claim Nigerians had illegally taken over most properties and turned them into drug and prostitution dens.

The African Diaspora Forum (ADM) chairperson, Mr Marc Gbaffou, confirmed the attacks and blamed Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba, for his inflammatory comments.

Early last December, Mr Mashaba told a media conference that illegal immigrants got there criminally and should be treated as such.

On Friday, he visited Rosettenville where he made claims that foreign nationals were using girls as young as nine as prostitutes in ‘drug houses’.

“According to community members, these homes are illegally occupied by Nigerian foreign nationals who run the homes as brothels and have girls as young as nine years old working as prostitutes.

Many of the women in these brothels are also alleged to have no official identification documentation,” said Mr Mashaba.

Mr Gbaffou said it was reckless for the mayor to make such a statement without proof.

“What proof does he have that foreigners are running these brothels? His remarks are very inflammatory, and it makes no difference that he has diverted from illegal immigrants to drug peddling. It is very dangerous and we see it as propaganda of hatred,” he said.

A community leader, Mr Andile Tshem, called on residents to desist from violence, adding that it was high time law enforcement agents took action against criminals.

“We don’t encourage this at all, you cannot correct a wrong with another wrong. South African people must not be living on the streets when foreigners are using houses as brothels,” he said.

Police have arrested a man found in one of the houses that were set alight in Rosettenville.

    1. That's not the point. If it is true that this is what Nigerians, mainly, and other Africans are doing, then I applaud South Africans for standing up for their children. I am Nigerian, and I wouldn't abide another African coming to my community to do these abominable acts.

    1. so drug dealers are hard working foreigners? This is a fight against drugs and prostitutions not hard working people. So must they sit and watch Nigerians destroying their place with drugs? you won't even let it happen in your own back yard.

    1. With respect... I always read or hear of these vague charges of how the Nigerian soldiers fought for and died liberating South Africa .. I'd like to know how and where did all this take place ? .. there's also some other African expats jumping on the bandwagon with similar claims.. My research shows that some African countries hosted members of Umkonto we Sizwe in secret camps, their citizens was unaware of their presence..

Major cable in niger is from South Africa.. a musician sing that he is a plantain boy, he did not go to Bayesa where he can inspire other children selling plantain ... most of the music videos are short in South Africa by a Nigerian musician and soon on, until we lean to love ourselves those illiterate will not stop humiliating our people.

  11. You can't just live in a country because your black. And it's a black country, Africa is a continent if they are there legally then it wrong, it is equal wrong if there not, understand that South Africa already has a very poor population and don't need more of it. It is the Nigerian Government's responsibility not the South Africans government's responsibility to take care of the Nigerian people additionally I have had a lot of conversations with South Africans regarding Africans come into the country to live and they find that they are not contributing financially, so with any country if you're not prodective you are going to be asked to leave I think the problem with a lot of black people they forget Africa is a continent just like Europe is a continent some European countries can't move to the UK just because they are white.

  12. Shut up u fool....i blame those Nigerians living there. I can't imagine my self living in a country of illiterates like south Africa. It's a shame that Nigerians can be tho humiliated by stupid south African. Honestly I see those people as bush people

  13. I see people pointing fingers at South Africans, Can we take a look at this situation... These are people who have taken over the houses and are selling drugs and explicit prostitution. I am not in any way condoning this but these are people trying to get control over what is happening since some police officers are working with the drug lords. If you in South Africa doing your own hustle in the right way no one will fight you. Yes majority of South Africans are not doing well but that doesn't grant a Nigerian to come and misbehave. If this was happening in your country you would do something about it, you wouldn't tolerate it at all.

  14. very funny.. there is always an excuse for hatred and if this is really genuine and the Nigerians are into drugs and prostitution, then i wont be wrong to say that you South African encourage it. There are always two sides to a coin. As much as i hate drugs and prostitution but i can boldly tell you that they wont be there if you are not buying the drugs and patronizing them for prostitution. Let the South Africans stop buying drugs and prostituting and i bet with you they will be gone in less than a month without anyone driving them out or burning any house... its common sense, demand and supply
