Troops enter Gambia to back Adama Barrow as president, remove Jammeh

Senegalese troops on Thursday entered The Gambia to back Adama Barrow as president as Yahya Jammeh refuses to stand down, army spokesman said.

Gambia’s new president Barrow took the oath of office in the country’s embassy in Senegal earlier on Thursday.

Barrow was sworn in days after seeking shelter in Dakar with incumbent Yahya Jammeh still refusing to stand down after losing a December election.

It remained unclear whether force would be used to ensure Barrow can finally take office in Banjul.
