Huge earthquake strikes off of Solomon islands, tsunami waves possible soon

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 has struck off the Solomon Islands.

Hazardous tsunami waves from the earthquake are possible within the next hours along the coasts of the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Kosrae, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The Pacific Tsunmai Warning Centre (PTWC) has confirmed the colossal seismic activity and issued a grave warning that a tsunami could soon batter the nation.

They said in statement that “widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible.”

The epicentre was recorded roughly 43 miles from the Solomon Islands, according to United States Geological Survey (USGS).
